The listing as “monument of public interest” attributed by Portaria 613/2013 of September the 20th to Mercado do Bolhão, recognizes heritage value to two inseparable dimensions – the uniqueness of the Beaux Arts building and its function as a traditional market.

The intervention to the 1914-1917’s building and market, originally designed by architect António Correia da Silva, builds on the recuperation and enhacement of the building and the modernization necessary to meet the demands of the activity as central market of fresh products in Porto.

This action, transformative but attentive to the existing values, seeks to restore the building’s identity and coherence, open it to the city and update its function – in a demanding consideration between material and immaterial heritage.
